Spring Semester 2020 Catalog

Basic Machinist, Technical Certificate of Credit

Overview

Offered at the Augusta campus

Entrance Dates:Fall, Spring, and Summer
Length of Program:One Term
Credit Hours Required for Graduation:10

Program Description: The Basic Machinist certificate program prepares students for a machine tool operator position with a machine shop or machine tool establishment. Topics include foundations of mathematics, an introduction to machine tool technology, and blueprint reading for machine tool applications.

Occupational Trends: Machinists held about 421,500 jobs in 2008. About 78% work in manufacturing industries such as machine shops and machinery, motor vehicle and parts, aerospace products and parts, and other transportation equipment manufacturing. Maintenance machinists work in most industries that use production machinery.

Employment Opportunities: Employment of machinists is projected to decline by 5 percent over the 2008-2018 decade due to rising productivity among these workers and strong foreign competition in the manufacture of goods. Despite the projected decline in employment, job opportunities for machinists should continue to be good, as employers value the wide-ranging skills of these workers. Employment levels in this occupation are influenced by economic cycles as the demand for machined goods rises and falls.
